Once you’re back on the surface, take some time to wander around the trails of the Ozark National Forest. Squeeze through small gaps in the cave and look for the Titans, a group of huge limestone columns at the end of the tour. Intrepid explorers can spend several hours in the caverns on the Wild Cave Tour, which involves crawling into smaller spaces and going beyond the metal walkways. This trail is also available in the dark, lit only by headlamps. Descend to the middle level of the caverns system and marvel at the passageways carved by water. Take the Discovery Trail for a more demanding trip underground. Look for unusual formations such as soda straws, which are thin, hollow pillars of limestone that drip from the ceiling. This is the most accessible route and will take you past flows, stalagmites and stalactites. Join the Dripstone Trail for a gentle introduction to the world of limestone caverns. Explore caves that were formed over 350 million years ago and learn about their formation in the Water Works exhibit. The caves at Blanchard Springs are run by the local Forest Service and members of the organization will guide you on tours through the attraction. Travel through two levels of beautifully lit caves to marvel at this stunning subterranean landscape. A reader (Ed Gower) dropped me a note to let me know that the National Forest Service also blocks cave entrances to protect Indian artifacts and cave paintings.
